The Age of Aquarius – a song written for the musical “Hair,” was written in the late 1960s, a time of change and unrest in America. Civil rights protests. The rise of feminism. Good things that started with anger and discontent. We’re seeing similarities to 2025 and beyond. Although many thought the song was “just a hippie thing,” I’ve been to enough astrologers and psychics to know that the Age of Aquarius is indeed real. And man, I am looking forward to some peace and love.
Let’s start with some basics.
- In astrology, an age is a period of roughly 2,000 years, which corresponds to the average time it takes for the vernal equinox to move from one constellation of the zodiac into the next. In plain English, the vernal equinox moves into a new constellation every 2,000 years. It’s been moving through Pisces for the last 2,000 years, and it’s about to move into Aquarius. We are transitioning from the Age of Pisces into the Age of Aquarius.
- Pluto has a huge influence on us. Because it’s the planet of transformation, rebirth, and beginnings, when Pluto moves into a new sign, big changes are afoot. Pluto transitioned from Capricorn to Aquarius on November 19, 2024, and will remain there until March 8, 2043.
Regardless of how and when we get there, the Age of Aquarius is marked by change. Lots of big change. According to Aliza Kelly, astrologer for New York Magazine, “Aquarius is motivated by collective care, humanitarianism, and large-scale societal matters. With Pluto in the sign of Aquarius, we should expect some radical dismantling to occur, as well as some extraordinary developments that may change life as we know it.”
Sound familiar?
There’s meaning behind all of the discontent we’re feeling. But the movie has a happy ending! Doesn’t that make you feel better? We’re also realizing that we’re part of something much larger than us and it’s a cycle. Because an age is roughly 2,000 years, the changes are more gradual and cycles repeat themselves. “Astrology is a language that speaks to patterns and cycles of time, and patterns repeat themselves,” said Katelynn McCorquodale, astrologer and artist. “Astrology helps us zoom out and see things from a larger perspective. We can look forward in time to see what the planetary patterns are showing us.”
So, astrology is the tool we use to read those patterns, but the start of the actual Age of Aquarius is up for debate. Some say it started in 2012. Some say that it hasn’t yet begun. Technically, Pluto went into Aquarius in November of 2024, but that doesn’t necessarily mean the Age of Aquarius started on that specific date. An age factors in the sun and Earth’s place in the solar system. What do professional astrologists say? “We’re in an in-between place,” said Megan Hanna, resident astrologer at The Playful Soul in Indianapolis. “We are in transition between Pisces and Aquarius right now. Pisces is the last sign of the zodiac. It is the mystic. It’s about religion and spirituality, and we’ve been kind of looking up to this God in the sky. There is definitely this deep connotation with Pisces. It is the sign of Christ consciousness.”
So, how does the Age of Aquarius differ from the Age of Pisces?
“Aquarius = power to the people,” Hanna said. “So, in Pisces, we were finding God in the spiritual, in the ether, and in Aquarius, we’re finding it back within ourselves. It reminds me of the Ram Dass quote, ‘Treat everyone you meet like they’re God in drag.’” In other words, we are all God.
The movement into Aquarius ushers in a period of revolution, innovation, and power shifting to the collective. But because Pluto is also named for the Roman god of the underworld, we also see suffering before the peace and love.
Sound familiar?
“Revolution is here. Aquarius is about uprising, political unrest and people being fed up,” said McCoquodale. “But I like to look at it in a more positive way – Pluto is about power. As we move into the sign of Aquarius, we move into the power of the collective.”
So, we’re moving from an “I” place to a “we” place. “And I think it’s up to us to create that power of the human consciousness, the power of us as humans, because I think we’ve been outsourcing our power,” said Hanna.
The Age of Aquarius starts with unrest, but ultimately ushers in peace and love. Much like the month of March, which comes in like a lion and out like a lamb. We survive the rain, wind and cold, so we can enjoy the sun and warmth later on. We have a lot of work to do, but also a lot to look forward to. We can do this. We have the power.
